Accomplishments
Dr. William Bandy's career exemplifies a commitment to pushing boundaries, solving complex problems, and making a lasting impact on both the technology industry and society as a whole. Here's a summary of his notable achievements:
1. Education: BSEE and MSEE (with distinction) from University of Oklahoma in 1967. Despite faculty warnings on the difficulty of transitioning from engineering to physics he received his PhD in physics from the University of Maryland in 1974. In 2012 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Physics Department.
2. The National Security Agency: Joined the NSA in 1967 where he played a pivotal role for the NSA in the birth of the semiconductor industry, working at the forefront of turning semiconductor technology from a black art to a science, managing the NSA in-house IC fabrication facility, developing an expert system for IC processing, and publishing state-of-the-art research papers on semiconductor physics.
3. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency 1985-1990: As NSA’s first 2-year assignee to DARPA, Dr. Bandy managed a $30M/year research programs aimed at advancing computer-aided IC design (CAD) and semiconductor manufacturing (CAM) tools to automate increasingly complex functions. Director of DARPA requested of NSA a two-year extension for him to be the first program manager for the $500M joint industry and government Semiconductor Manufacturing consortium to revitalize the U.S. declining semiconductor manufacturing base. The Director of DARPA requested of NSA another six-month extension for him to launch a new program initiative to integrate computer and internet connectivity into advanced display technology resulting in today’s smart high-definition content streaming TV. Dr. Bandy also served as the first executive director for the congressionally mandated presidential commission to make recommendations on improving the declining state of U.S. semiconductor industry working with the director of Bell Labs, and other leaders in the semiconductor industry.
4. Microelectronics Research Leadership: Returning to NSA as a Senior Level Executive, Dr. Bandy managed the Microelectronic Research Lab, overseeing advanced research projects tailored to specific mission requirements. His leadership and entrepreneurial spirit laid the groundwork for future ventures outside of the government.
5. Entrepreneurial Ventures: Dr. Bandy co-founded Matrics in 2000 driving innovation in RFID technology field. His ability to bridge theory and practice, coupled with a relentless pursuit of excellence, led to the development of groundbreaking products and technologies. Using random number IDs enabled significant performance gains over RFID competitors leading to Symbol Technologies buying Matrics in 2004 for $236M. In 2006 he co-founded Innurvation with new technology in non-evasive scanning medical devices.
Leadership at Matrics2: As a co-founder of Matrics2, Dr. Bandy continued the development of random number IDs for item level tracking within the supply chain’s database using smart devices that became the prototypes for the current Key Distribution Center and Secure Access Portal app/software. Realizing that this Random Number Security System for supply chain tracking could also be used to provide paired keys not over the internet to enable sending symmetric keys securely over the internet was the eureka moment that re-directed the company towards fighting cybercrime. His leadership and entrepreneurial spirit continue to drive Matrics2 forward in its mission to revolutionize cybersecurity.
